Fon fetish objects, such as this Bocio, are made by blacksmiths under the order of a diviner, and are traditionally used by families for protection. The word Bocio, designating an ancient religious manifestation, is composed of “bo”, power, and “cio” meaning cadaver. This statue has a thick patina consisting of libations, a cachet of small padlocks cascading down the left arm and side, and continuing on the right hand side. A bib necklace made of natural fibre rests off kilter on the chest.
