Holy Water Ladel With Lotus Detail

Java, Sumatra, Indonesia
17th Century
Bronze
7” x 12”
Ex Santa Fe, New Mexico collection

Water ladles such as this one were used to distribute holy water over cups, or for the sprinkling of holy water. They are distinguished by the shallow bowl and curled lotus flower at the end of the handle. Holy water is a very important part of the Javanese culture, especially for weddings.
