Footed Food Tray, “Dulang”

Batak People, North Sumatra
Late 19th Century
5” x 15”

Exceptional Footed Serving Platter – It is fashioned by hand from a single piece of Merbau wood, a highly valued local hardwood, and was used in feasts and celebrations. The Batak are fond of pork and also eat dog and congealed blood. They grow wet rice were there is enough irrigation water and have built numerous terraces and raise dry rice where enough water is unavailable for wet rice. They also grow peppers, cabbage, tomatoes and beans and raise cash crops such as coffee, tobacco, fruits and cinnamon.
